We want to preserve the existing makerspace in Huerfano County and grow it into the full Skillworks Innovation Center—a community hub for creativity, hands-on learning, workforce development, and entrepreneurship.
We ask local leaders, funders, and decision-makers to support the permanent establishment and expansion of the makerspace into the Skillworks Innovation Center. This includes backing funding, land access, and long-term planning to make this vital community resource sustainable.
Perustelut
Walsenburg and the surrounding Huerfano County area face limited opportunities for youth, job-seekers, and aspiring entrepreneurs. The current makerspace has already shown what’s possible—offering classes in 3D printing, laser cutting, printing,STEAM and more.
Skillworks Innovation Center would expand this into a full-scale facility that supports:
- Local job creation and workforce readiness
- Youth STEAM education and engagement
- Small business incubation and entrepreneurship
- Sustainable technologies and trades training
- Tourism and regional economic revitalization
This is more than a workshop—it’s a place for people of all ages to learn, build, and thrive together.
We believe that a rural town deserves access to the same innovation and opportunity as any city. Help us show that our community wants—and needs—Skillworks.

The Skillworks Innovation Center petition is important to me because I believe our community deserves access to modern learning and entrepreneurial opportunities. The expansion of the makerspace into a full innovation center will provide essential job training, youth education, and small business support, directly addressing critical needs in Huerfano County. It's about ensuring our rural area has the same chance to innovate and prosper as any city.
