Petition is addressed to: Dr. Dennis O'Hara, Islip School District Superintendent & Mr. Philip Dineen, Islip School District Board of Education President
We, the undersigned parents, guardians and concerned members of the Islip community, respectfully urge the Board to reconsider the current structure of the Islip Middle School (IMS) bell schedule and explore a transition to a 9-period day, or other scheduling adjustments that would better serve all students, particularly those in the arts and special education.
Over the past year, there has been an ongoing dialogue within the Islip community about the limitations of the current 8-period schedule at IMS. As an active member of the community, both as a parent and an educator, I have had the privilege of engaging with fellow parents, teachers, and members of the district's central administration about these challenges. While we initially explored solutions such as adopting schedules from other middle schools on Long Island, the idea of changing the bell schedule could not be implemented this year due to concerns about state and federal budget cuts and the desire to prevent significant increases in local property taxes.
However, after continued reflection and conversation with parents and educators alike, it is clear that the current scheduling structure is creating several inequities that disproportionately affect middle school students, particularly those enrolled in the music program, students with special education needs, and those seeking a well-rounded academic experience.
We ask Dr. O'Hara and the Islip School District Board of Education to consider the following actions:
- Transition to a 9-period day at Islip Middle School.
- Ensure that all IMS music ensembles are scheduled during the school day, allowing for full student participation.
- Provide equal access to electives for students with special education needs.
- Address the scheduling conflicts between extra academic help and music ensembles, allowing for better academic support for all students.
This change is essential not only for the success of our students in the arts but also for ensuring that every student has an equitable opportunity to explore a wide range of subjects, receive the support they need, and excel academically.
We understand that such changes come with logistical and financial challenges, but we believe that these challenges can be overcome with thoughtful planning and prioritization of what is best for all students. We urge the Board to take the necessary steps to create a schedule that is inclusive, equitable, and supportive of the diverse needs of our middle school learners
Reason
Key Concerns:
1. Music Program Scheduling:
The current zero-period scheduling of IMS music ensembles (band, orchestra, and chorus) before school creates undue challenges for both students and families. While these classes are graded and carry academic weight equivalent to core subjects such as ELA and math, the before-school status diminishes their perceived importance in the broader academic context. This has already led to attrition in our middle school music programs with students, particularly from families with limited access to transportation, discontinuing participation in essential music ensembles like orchestra and band.
In many districts across Long Island, middle school music programs are integrated into the school day, allowing students to participate fully in these academic courses without sacrificing other educational needs. We respectfully ask the Board to consider restructuring the bell schedule to incorporate music ensembles into the regular school day or, ideally, transition to a 9-period day.
2. Impact on Middle School Students in Special Education:
The current schedule structure has created an unfortunate situation for students with special education needs, who are often unable to take electives due to the limited space in their schedules. These students are being denied the opportunity to participate in a well-rounded curriculum that includes art, family and consumer sciences, digital geography, and other electives that are critical for their academic and personal growth. This issue, while unintended, is a clear example of the inequity in our current scheduling system. A 9-period day would allow all students to engage in a broader range of electives, ensuring that students with special education needs are included in the same opportunities as their peers.
3. Balancing Music and Academics:
For students in both music ensembles and core academic classes, conflicts with extra help, particularly in subjects like Regents-level algebra and science, are a significant problem. Many middle school musicians who need additional academic support are forced to choose between attending extra help and participating in their regularly scheduled, graded ensemble classes. This leads to a reduction in the level of participation and retention in the music program. A 9-period day would eliminate this scheduling conflict, providing students with the opportunity to participate in both academic support and music ensembles without having to sacrifice either.
4. Expanding Elective Offerings:
Currently, IMS students, particularly those in grades 7 and 8, have limited access to electives. In other districts, middle school students have the flexibility to take a variety of electives, such as science research, coding, virtual enterprise, and theater exploration, alongside their core subjects and music programs. This balance allows students to explore new interests and passions while continuing to thrive academically. By expanding the bell schedule to 9 periods, Islip Middle School would provide students with the ability to take full advantage of increased elective opportunities.

Why people sign
As a parent with a child in before school music, my child did drop chorus and remained only in orchestra. Although my child wanted to do both there was too much of a strain getting in early 5 days a week then trying to participate in sports after school. Extra help if needed was bypassed due to not wanting to mess with attendance.
For all the reasons mentioned especially music during the day, mornings are an absolute killer for my daughters.
It is important that Islip students have every opportunity to explore and experience academics and art.
