Ms. Sarah M. Troy Jones Alleyne was born in Columbus County, NC in back of Welches Creek Baptist Church when the Church was originally painted uniquely Red on Jones’ Way and is now painted White.
Sarah traveled to Harlem from the South in the 60;s during the Civil Rights movement to economically sustain the plantation promise her Grandpa Ponce De Leon Jones gave her during her youth. Sarah Alleyne raised chickens, hogs, picked tobacco, cotton, grew peanuts and grew syrup. Heading North was a quest for economic advancement and opportunity to sustain the Christian Promise that her parents entrusted her with to do the right thing. The area comprising the county was once part of Bath precinct, organized under the English Crown in 1696. Some settlers to Columbus County NC came from Barbados and Great Britain up the Cape fear River in search of land. Their home island was becoming overcrowded and the new Americans came in search of new opportunities in a new frontier.
While up North in the 1980’s she was an alternate delegate to the Democratic National Convention for former President Jimmy Carter. She lived In Parkchester for over 5 decades. Sarah Alleyne would eventually run for Assemblywoman in the 76th Assembly District in 1993 solely on her funds and community and family support with no major political endorsement in which she came in second place. This did not stop Sarah from continuing being active in her community. Sarah Alleyne also served on the senior board of the Parkchester Pep for Seniors and was appointed as an alternate delegate for Wes Clark for President in 2004. Sarah Alleyne served 17 years on the Community Board #9 and was 2nd Vice President. Sarah was the co-founder of Parkchester Police Athletic League , an after school program for a diversity of youth within the district. For over a decade Sarah Alleyne spent countless hours within the Board of Education at the Parkchester Public School 106 in the Parent Association, and the School Advisory Board Leadership Team, while making sure that not only her children were receiving quality education but other children who were predominately immigrants, and Native Indians migrated to Bronx County. Advocacy was most loved by the new US citizens and they felt assured they would get quality education deserved with Sarah Alleyne being a Parent Advocate. Sarah Alleyne’s other affiliations included the Westchester United Methodist advisory board, NAACP, Black and Puerto Rican Caucus, State Committee Woman, Coalition of Black Elected Democrats, Bronx County of Women Democratic Association, Council of Negro Women, Local 1199 Union, Female District Leader 76 A.D in the Bronx and the Youth Advisory Council where she went over countless proposals for youth not for profits organizations. Mrs. Sarah Alleyne was involved in the birth of the Parkchester Young Democratic organization and was elected to State Committee Women in the 78th A. D. The passion to “get out the vote” led her to be one of the Founders of the New Parkchester Democratic Club in 2017, which was established to involve residents of the Parkchester community in the political process info@newPDC.org. Sarah Alleyne leaves her 4 daughters and 3 sons and 1 grandson, 1 great grand daughter and a host of relatives and friends. You can send cards, condolences and well wishes to her family at P.O Box 27 Bladenboro, NC 28320. A Book honoring her legacy is in the making.
Reason
Mrs. Sarah M. Alleyne a local 1199 long time delegate and healthcare worker worked non stop in her political and activist endeavors to make sure people came out and voted and signed petitions for local leaders running for office. One thing you could do is depend on Sarah. M Alleyne to get the job done, help her local Parkchester residents and advocate for health care. She raised 3 sons and 2 daughters in the Bronx who loved her and respected her trailblazing advocacy in her community of Parkchester where she resided for since 1969 till her death. Many of her local 1199 workers respected her and wanted to contribute to her upcoming book. Mrs. Sarah M. Alleyne was able to register her landownership upon her passing with the Library of Congress at the 9/11 Story booth Corps as one of the 2% survivors of the landloss cases in the South among Afro Descendant Ownership of the United States.
