Petition addressed to: Ames Council
Stop the Hunziker building of the 100-home development. As a local resident, I am deeply concerned about the negative impacts this will bring to our neighborhood. Our existing infrastructure and local roads are not built to absorb this level of intense expansion, as well as the great loss of open space that is rarely seen these days and the wildlife that inhabits it.
- Increased Traffic: Adding over a hundred new housing units at this intersection will cause severe traffic congestion and create safety hazards on Ontario Street and Scholl Road, which already experience steady neighborhood use.
- Overcrowding & Population Density: This sudden influx of new residents and extra housing units is completely out of character with the established, peaceful density of the surrounding area.
- Overburdened Neighborhood: Our local streets and neighborhood footprint should not be overwhelmed by this type of high-density project.
Reason
The City of Ames Council has already advanced the rezoning of this land to residential for the development on the city's west side. The time to STOP this is NOW! Let them know you are opposed to this project. This project will be an aesthetic eyesore that addresses no community need; in our view it exists solely to inflate the portfolios of the already wealthy.

The traffic implication for that surrounding neighborhood is a major concern. Also the environmental safety for potential residents. It has always been an high risk area. Ames has so many apartments homes that go up quickly and are poorly built. I do not think our population has grown enough to warrant all of the development.

Traffic on Ontario is already nuts, why on earth would we add to it? I remember when it was still gravel, and then paved but mostly a local traffic road. 13th street opened and that was nice, but neighborhood traffic picked up. Then north Ames expanded and it became a main traffic line to get from north Ames to all parts west des moines. The commuter traffic is extremely heavy. I just dont see inviting more traffic by adding so many more homes in the middle of that traffic flow.
