Petition addressed to: Cape Town City Manager

CITY OF CAPE TOWN NEEDS TO ENFORCE LAW & ORDER IN GORDONS BAY!
Gordon’s Bay is a coastal town — not a lawless zone.

We, the undersigned residents, ratepayers, businesses and concerned visitors to Gordon’s Bay, call on the City of Cape Town to immediately strengthen visible Law Enforcement and Traffic enforcement in Gordon’s Bay, particularly during weekends, hot-weather days and throughout the summer season.
Recent exceptionally busy weekends have shown exactly what Gordon’s Bay can expect when visitor numbers surge. Beaches and surrounding areas have become heavily congested, while residents are increasingly concerned about public drinking, alcohol on beaches, public urination, illegal fires, excessive noise, illegal parking, reckless driving, speeding, drag racing, littering, suspected illegal substance use, vehicle theft and other anti-social behaviour.

THE BY-LAWS EXIST. ENFORCE THEM.

We are not asking the City to stop people enjoying Gordon’s Bay. We are demanding that existing laws and municipal by-laws are consistently and visibly enforced.

The community is particularly concerned about:

  • Drinking alcohol and drunken behaviour in public places;
  • Alcohol consumption on beaches and suspected illegal alcohol sales;
  • Public urination and other inappropriate use of public spaces;
  • Illegal fires in prohibited areas;
  • Excessive noise, amplified music, “boom boxes” and vehicle noise;
  • Illegal and obstructive parking;
  • Speeding, reckless driving and dangerous traffic behaviour;
  • Drag racing, high-revving vehicles and motorcycles;
  • Littering and public-space degradation;
  • Illegal substance use and other anti-social behaviour;
  • Theft from motor vehicles;
  • Severe congestion around the beachfront, R44 and surrounding roads;
  • Inadequate toilet facilities during peak visitor periods.

People are sick and tired of seeing SAPS and City Law Enforcement ignoring crime! Driving past a problem is not enforcement. Visibility without intervention is not enough. Where are the 5 Metro Police NSOs (Neighbourhood Safety Officers) assigned to each Ward, including Gordons Bay???

Reason

WE DEMAND IMMEDIATE ACTION

We call on the City of Cape Town to:

  1. Deploy regular, highly visible foot patrols in Gordon’s Bay, particularly at Main Beach, Milkwood, Bikini Beach and Whale Watch.
  2. Enforce all applicable City by-laws and traffic laws against offenders, regardless of who they are.
  3. Increase Law Enforcement and Traffic operations during weekends, hot-weather days and peak summer periods - which has already started.
  4. Take decisive action against illegal parking, speeding, drag racing, excessive noise, public drinking, illegal fires, public urination and other public-place offences.
  5. Address the chronic traffic congestion affecting Gordon’s Bay and the R44.
  6. Provide adequate public toilet facilities before visitor numbers peak - with after hour access.
  7. Prevent the misuse of public spaces for unlawful or anti-social activities.
  8. Ensure sufficient enforcement resources are available to protect residents and responsible visitors.
  9. Establish a clear Summer Operational Plan covering Metro Police, Law Enforcement, Traffic and other relevant City services.
  10. Provide the community with meaningful information on enforcement resources, operations and results.

GORDON’S BAY CANNOT WAIT UNTIL DECEMBER.

The warning signs are already here. When the weather is good, Gordon’s Bay can become overwhelmed within hours. Waiting for the festive season before acting is simply waiting for problems to become crises.

Gordon’s Bay deserves the same standard of enforcement expected anywhere else in Cape Town.
Limited resources cannot become an excuse for unlimited disorder.
We call on the City to plan now, deploy now and enforce now.

SEE IT? REPORT IT.
EXPERIENCE IT? REPORT IT.
REPEATED PROBLEM? DEMAND ACTION.

SIGN THIS PETITION AND DEMAND THAT GORDON’S BAY GET THE ENFORCEMENT, SAFETY AND RESPECT IT DESERVES.

Why people sign

Visible active policing Strand and GB not police standing talking they need to parade up and down enforcing the law

We live in Gordon's bay and have seen what happens during summer time , Alcohol plays a big part in behaviour and brings criminal elements with it. People urinate anywhere, dig holes in the sand to hide used nappies and alcohole.
Used needles and litter on the beach ... Worst of all "they don't clean up after themselves .
There should be fines given to people who litter and arrests should be made when people are intoxicated in public.
No one feels safe and our children can not enjoy the very beaches at our doorstep!! Gatvol!!

We can not enjoy the beach stuff gets stolen it's all dirty ans smells and drunk drivers

I’m a resident & would like to know that area remains safe for all to enjoy

Damit unser Strand sauber bleibt
