Petition addressed to: South African Council for Educators (SACE)

We, the undersigned, call upon the South African Council for Educators (SACE) to waive or suspend membership fees for qualified but unemployed educators. It is unjust to require professionals who currently have no income to pay mandatory annual fees in order to remain registered. This financial burden disadvantages unemployed educators, limits their professional standing, and creates barriers to accessing employment opportunities when posts become available.

We therefore demand:

  • Immediate suspension of SACE fees for unemployed educators
  • A fair policy recognizing employment status
  • A transparent system for declaring unemployment without penalties

Reason

  • Promotes fairness: Professionals without income should not be penalized for being unemployed.
  • Protects dignity: Educators should not lose professional status simply because they cannot afford fees.
  • Supports employment readiness: Keeping unemployed educators registered ensures they can accept jobs immediately when opportunities arise.
  • Advances social justice: This aligns with national priorities of reducing unemployment and supporting young professionals entering the workforce.

Why people sign

It is important because unemployed teachers are also financially struggling/burdened. Expecting them to pay the sace certificate whilst they have no source of income is not fair, to add to that having their certification revoked/suspended for not being able to pay is diabolical.

Being unemployed means there's no source of income, so why should I pay with

I am a newly qualified teacher who will be affected by SACE fees as I am registered but still looking for employment

There charges are ridiculous for unemployed people, we are already struggling with getting job, having to print and travel and now paying just not to be suspended. Crazy if you ask me about it.

Am currently unemployed and I can't afford all the fees that are charged to us by sace office's. It was hard enough to make it and pay in order for me to be employed. But it is more hard not getting a job even for temp position buy still I am being expected to pay fees.
