Petition is addressed to: Councillor Brad Bradford

Residents accessing the Danforth GO Station from Stephenson Avenue face unsafe conditions every day. The only current access involves unlit stairs and crossing busy traffic without a safe pedestrian crossing nearby. This creates serious risks for commuters, families, seniors, and anyone traveling at night. The lack of proper lighting and a direct sidewalk connection discourages safe walking and forces people to take risks that should not exist in our neighbourhood.

Reason

Our Demand (Solution):

We call on the City of Toronto and Metrolinx to work together to:

  1. Build a direct sidewalk path from Stephenson Avenue to the Danforth GO platform, running beside the renovated power station.
  2. Install proper lighting and safety measures to ensure safe access for all pedestrians, including families, seniors, and those with mobility challenges.

Why This Matters:

  • 🚶 Safety: Prevents dangerous crossings and improves visibility at night.
  • ♿ Accessibility: Creates safe, barrier-free access for strollers, wheelchairs, and bikes.
  • 🌍 Sustainability: Encourages transit use by making walking access easier and safer.
  • 🏘️ Community: Strengthens neighbourhood connections and makes the GO station more accessible for everyone.

Call to Action (Closing):

By signing this petition, you are showing your support for a safer, more accessible community.
👉 Please also contact our local city councillor and Metrolinx community relations to let them know this issue matters to you:

Subject: Support for Safer Access to Danforth GO

Hello,

I am a local resident and I strongly support the creation of a direct, well-lit sidewalk path from Stephenson Avenue to the Danforth GO Station platform.
The current access is unsafe:

  • Poor lighting on the stairs, especially at night
  • No safe crosswalk nearby
  • Heavy traffic risks for pedestrians, seniors, and families

Building this path would make our community safer, more accessible, and more connected, while encouraging more people to use transit.

Please prioritize this improvement for the safety and convenience of all residents.

Thank you,

News

  • Hi everyone,

First off, thank you so much for supporting this initiative to create a safe pedestrian pathway from Stephenson Avenue to the Danforth GO Station (north platform). Your signatures and messages have been instrumental in getting the attention of key agencies and showing that our community truly cares about safer, more accessible transit connections.

    Here’s where things stand:

    * The proposed path area falls under a shared jurisdiction between the City of Toronto, HydroOne, and Metrolinx. Because of this, the process involves coordination between multiple agencies, which has slowed things down, but we’re making steady progress.
    * I’m currently in contact with teams at Metrolinx, HydroOne, and several City of Toronto divisions, including the Transportation Services – Cycling & Pedestrian Projects team and Community Planning.
    * The goal is to find the right city representatives who can review this proposal, complete the necessary paperwork, and bring the idea forward for technical and safety evaluation.
    * We’re also emphasizing the need for multiple entry points to the GO Station, not just one, to improve safety, accessibility, and prevent congestion as our community grows and major construction begins for new tracks.
    * Beyond convenience, this is about preventing accidents, improving accessibility, and preparing for population growth in our neighbourhood.

I’m also working with local media, including Beach Metro Community News, to help raise awareness and get more community members involved.

Next goal: Let’s reach 500 signatures to strengthen our voice when engaging City and Metrolinx officials. Please share this petition with neighbours, friends, and local groups, especially those who use Danforth GO or live near Stephenson, Main, or Danforth. http://openpetition.org/!rxldt

You can also make a big impact by sending a quick email to the following contacts to express your support for this pathway project and emphasize the importance of safer access to Danforth GO:

    Councillor’s Office: councillor_bradford@toronto.ca, Kirsten.Hay@toronto.ca
    City Teams: newsidewalks@toronto.ca, visionzeroto@toronto.ca, 311@toronto.ca
    Metrolinx Community Relations: TorontoEast@metrolinx.com

Even a short note helps show that our community is united in wanting safer, smarter pedestrian infrastructure.

Thank you again for your continued support, every signature, share, and email brings us one step closer to making this pathway a reality.

    Warm regards,
    Dan Balcaban
  • Residents of the Danforth Village and surrounding communities are calling for a direct, safe sidewalk connection from Stephenson Avenue to the north platform of Danforth GO Station.

    The issue:
Currently, pedestrians are forced to cross at Main & Danforth or use unsafe, poorly lit stairs on Stephenson. This creates dangerous conditions, especially for seniors, families, and people with accessibility needs. Main & Danforth has already seen serious incidents, including the tragic death of an elderly woman in 2021 and a hit-and-run in 2025.

    The solution:
A dedicated sidewalk beside the HydroOne site, where work is already underway, would create a safe, well-lit, direct path to the platform. This would not require major new construction, as it runs through vacant space adjacent to existing upgrades.

    Why now:
Danforth GO is about to undergo major track and station upgrades, which will cause disruption for years. Adding this sidewalk during that work is the most efficient and cost-effective time to do it. Our growing neighbourhood — with new condos and higher density — cannot rely on just one main access point. Most GO stations already have multiple safe entries, reducing congestion and improving flow. Improved lighting and upgraded stairs on Stephenson will also deter unsafe activity and improve the overall safety of the area.

    What you can do:
Sign this petition to show your support.
Contact our City Councillor and Metrolinx directly to share why this is important for you and your family.
Together, we can make Danforth GO safer, more accessible, and better prepared for our growing community.

More than a safety concern, it’s also a logistical concern as the residential area grows, having only one entry point for Danforth Go is a congestion concern for the public commuters and also the drivers. Two months ago there was a hit&run of someone crossing Main in front of the GO station: https://toronto.citynews.ca/2025/07/07/toronto-hit-and-run-danforth-go-station/

It could work if there was support by the city council

Why people sign

Safety is my main concern and this direct access from the GO station to Stephenson Ave. will make the crossing of the Main St. safe for everyone.

I use the GO station and walk across Main St. to Stephenson Ave. which is challenging with lots of traffic and a safety concern. Direct path to the GO station from Stephenson Ave. will address my safety concern as well as other people using this path regularly.

Dangerous for cars, pedestrians, and bikes as people are crossing from the go station to the west side of Maine or from the east side, including the new apartment to the go station

Safety should be made a priority. There is currently no convenient walking path to cross Main Street safely to access the GO platform.
