Petition addressed to: Councillor Brad Bradford

Residents accessing the Danforth GO Station from Stephenson Avenue face unsafe conditions every day. The only current access involves unlit stairs and crossing busy traffic without a safe pedestrian crossing nearby. This creates serious risks for commuters, families, seniors, and anyone traveling at night. The lack of proper lighting and a direct sidewalk connection discourages safe walking and forces people to take risks that should not exist in our neighbourhood.

Our Demand (Solution):

We call on the City of Toronto and Metrolinx to work together to:

  1. Build a direct sidewalk path from Stephenson Avenue to the Danforth GO platform, running beside the renovated power station.
  2. Install proper lighting and safety measures to ensure safe access for all pedestrians, including families, seniors, and those with mobility challenges.

Why This Matters:

  • 🚶 Safety: Prevents dangerous crossings and improves visibility at night.
  • ♿ Accessibility: Creates safe, barrier-free access for strollers, wheelchairs, and bikes.
  • 🌍 Sustainability: Encourages transit use by making walking access easier and safer.
  • 🏘️ Community: Strengthens neighbourhood connections and makes the GO station more accessible for everyone.

Call to Action (Closing):

By signing this petition, you are showing your support for a safer, more accessible community.
👉 Please also contact our local city councillor and Metrolinx community relations to let them know this issue matters to you:

Subject: Support for Safer Access to Danforth GO

Hello,

I am a local resident and I strongly support the creation of a direct, well-lit sidewalk path from Stephenson Avenue to the Danforth GO Station platform.
The current access is unsafe:

  • Poor lighting on the stairs, especially at night
  • No safe crosswalk nearby
  • Heavy traffic risks for pedestrians, seniors, and families

Building this path would make our community safer, more accessible, and more connected, while encouraging more people to use transit.

Please prioritize this improvement for the safety and convenience of all residents.

Thank you,

  • Community Update – Next Step

    Happy New Year everyone!

Thank you so much for supporting the petition for safer access to Danforth GO. Your support has helped open conversations with the City, Metrolinx, and other agencies — and we’re now at the next important step.

I’ve created a short community input form to help shape a resident-led neighbourhood meeting focused on safety, accessibility, congestion, construction impacts, and GO station access. This will help show decision-makers what issues matter most to residents and how the community wants to be involved.

Please take 2–3 minutes to fill it out and share it with neighbours.

The more responses we gather, the stronger our case becomes. Please do share this link with your neighbours and anyone in our local area that is interested in being involved.

Thank you again for being part of this — momentum is building.

    Dan Balcaban
    Main and Danforth resident.

More than a safety concern, it’s also a logistical concern as the residential area grows, having only one entry point for Danforth Go is a congestion concern for the public commuters and also the drivers. Two months ago there was a hit&run of someone crossing Main in front of the GO station: https://toronto.citynews.ca/2025/07/07/toronto-hit-and-run-danforth-go-station/

It could work if there was support by the city council

Why people sign

I access the go station by crossing the street from main.

Safety for my children

A crosswalk on Main st, at the top of Stephenson stairs, is a very easy fix to a dangerous situation every day.

Access to the GO station currently is limited to that one path. It is dark and not that safe for women at night.

Because I live on Stephenson avenue and have to deal with going to the GO train quite often and it is dangerous. There needs to be access under the bridge like there used to be before it was removed. It needs to be put back so that it is safer for the community, the people, the cars and all involved
