Petition addressed to: Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu, MLA of Kodagu, Chief Minister of Karnataka
To the people of Kodagu and all who hold this land dear -
Our unity and our deep-rooted respect for this geography have always been our defining strengths. For generations, we have served as the humble guardians of these hills, preserving the intricate ecological balance that sustains our water, our wildlife, and our way of life.
However, that balance is currently under direct threat. The sacred, environmentally fragile slopes of Malma Betta are facing immediate devastation due to aggressive commercial expansion. This struggle is far greater than a single dispute over land; it represents a reckless trend that is threatening our future. The recent transaction involving 80 acres near this hallowed site serves as a stark warning: our cultural legacy and natural environment are being sold off for private profit.
We have reached a breaking point. We can no longer remain silent while our hills are carved up, our forests vanish, and our vital water supplies are put at risk by unchecked industrial-scale tourism and development. The environmental distress we are witnessing—from the increasing frequency of landslides to the loss of native biodiversity—is the direct consequence of putting temporary corporate greed ahead of the long-term survival of our district.
Our Demand:
We are choosing to take a definitive stand. We demand an immediate cessation of all commercial activity in the vicinity of Malma Betta. Furthermore, we call for a formal, district-wide moratorium on any new large-scale commercial projects within Kodagu’s ecologically sensitive areas. We urge the district authorities, the Department of Tourism, and our elected representatives to finally put the preservation of our homeland above the interests of external developers.
The very mountains that have nurtured us for centuries are now in need of our intervention. This is a battle for our spiritual identity, our physical safety, and the heritage we pass on to our children. I ask every citizen, regardless of their background, to stand in solidarity with us.
Let our message be loud and clear:
Kodagu is not for sale. We refuse to be spectators to the destruction of our homeland. Join us in this collective movement to protect the heart of our district before it is damaged beyond repair.
