An Eritrean diaspora-based, ultra-nationalist movement known as the Agazian Brotherhood has been airing extremely dangerous, fabricated news to foment sectarian violence in Eritrea over the last few months. Their TV channel is currently being broadcast on the Eutelsat platform. This hate-mongering group was active on YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok for about ten years before shifting to satellite television broadcasting. Their dehumanizing, genocidal rhetoric and hate speech toward Muslim, Catholic, and Protestant minority communities carry grave consequences. If this satellite TV channel continues to operate, it will undoubtedly ignite sectarian bloodshed in the country.
As concerned Eritreans witnessing the dangerous amplification of hate speech against our communities, we call upon Eutelsat Stakeholders and the EU Cyber Hate Speech Monitoring Body to take immediate, decisive action. We demand that Eutelsat immediately suspend, investigate, and de-platform this extremely dangerous TV channel before it causes a tragedy similar to the Rwandan genocide in Eritrea.
The leader of this hate-mongering, violence-preaching, ultra-nationalist movement, Tesfazion Berhe Gerhelase (formerly known as Eyob Ghebre Sellassie), is a person of ill repute both in Eritrea and in England, where he currently resides. In 2014, a jury at the Old Bailey found Sellassie guilty of two counts of fraud by false representation for a £100,000 Gift Aid tax scam.
