Increase Access to 24 Hours For Study Spaces on UC Santa Barbara Campus During Finals Week

Every quarter as finals week rapidly approaches, thousands of students search for places to quietly study in such a loud and busy town and campus with such small and cramped living conditions that may prevent the ability to properly study. The UCSB Library is a fantastic location to study with beautiful views of the ocean and the mountains to relieve the stress of finals, and it offers extended hours during finals week, but the demand still heavily outweighs the supply. During regular hours leading up to and during finals week, every spot to study is taken, the tables are claimed at opening time of the library, and the TV screens displaying each floor's remaining capacity all say full by 10 AM. The issue is getting so bad, people have resorted to studying at local restaurants and coffee shops in Isla Vista like Hummus Republic, Starbucks, and Hana Kitchen. The new Student Housing complexes have also built study rooms in the complexes to help aid this issue, but the problem still persists.
Having a place to reliably study in a quiet location is not a luxury, it is imperative for a student to learn and gain new information and impacts many factors of a person during these stressful weeks. Students who commute, work, or have a crowded, loud house sometimes aren't able to study at normal hours and need the late hours of the night to have the ability to study without disturbing others.

This petition is designed for and by students of UC Santa Barbara, and we ask that all students who feel strongly about the matter sign this petition, share it with their friends and family to gain more support, and most importantly, show up to Associated Students Senate Meetings and contact UCSB's student affairs representatives to show them how strongly we as a community feel on this matter and want change.
