Doc Nichols Road in Durham, NC is a 1.8 mile curvy road. It has multiple developments in process including the Fowler Tract, Pelican, a development for 99 townhomes, a development for 83 units and a another development for 60+ townhouses. This is only a partial list. Due to the road's curvy nature and increase of residents, Doc Nichols Road in Durham, NC would benefit from the road's speed limit being decreased to 35 miles per hour, especially since some drivers excessively speed on this road in excess of 20+ miles per hour (often seen on weekends).
Moreso, at the intersection of Doc Nichols Road and Olive Branch Road, the speed limit increases to 45 miles per hour at the intersection. Residents from Doc Nichols Road would benefit from the speed limit being lowered to 35 miles per hour until drivers pass the Doc Nichols and Olive Branch Road intersection. Currently, the limit changes at the intersection so that if attempting to take a left turn onto Olive Branch Road from Doc Nichols Road, a left curves prohibits drivers from seeing oncoming traffic while concurrently Olive Branch Road traffic is increasing their speeds.
Reason
Residents have requested both developers and local politicians to decrease the speed limit with no success. Although there is no guarantee enforcement will occur, by decreasing the speed limits, it will make it easier for Doc Nichols Road residents to enter and exit their residences. It will also increase safety on the road prior to additional individuals moving into the area. Finally, for drivers who use the Doc Nichols Road for a throughfare between Highways 98 and 70, it will potentially cause them to become more cognizant of the individuals who reside on the road.
