Petition addressed to: Oak Creek-Franklin Joint School District administration and school leadership
We, the undersigned parents and caregivers, are asking for a more intentional, developmentally appropriate approach to technology use in our elementary schools.
We recognize the importance of digital literacy, but believe Chromebooks should be used when they meaningfully enhance learning, rather than as a default activity.
We are requesting:
- Reduced nonessential screen time: Prioritize books, art, imaginative play, movement, and hands-on activities during indoor recess, free time, and projects that do not require technology.
- Clear age-appropriate guidelines: Establish and communicate expectations for daily Chromebook use, especially in kindergarten through second grade.
- Stronger digital safeguards: Review internet filtering, student browsing restrictions, and supervision practices to help prevent access to inappropriate or frightening content.
- Responsible AI use: Establish clear expectations for AI-generated materials used by staff and the PTO, with human review and consideration for original, human-created work.
- Parent transparency: Provide families with information about how frequently and for what purposes classroom technology is used.
We respectfully ask school leadership to review current practices, consider these changes, and communicate a plan for making technology use more purposeful and age-appropriate.
Reason
Our children are growing up in a world where screens are already everywhere. We believe elementary school should offer opportunities to step away from technology and engage in hands-on learning, creativity, movement, reading, and meaningful social interaction.
This concern is supported by research. In its 2026 policy statement, Digital Ecosystems, Children, and Adolescents, the American Academy of Pediatrics notes that excessive digital media use among children ages 6–12 is associated with weaker attention control and lower academic achievement. It also recognizes that high-quality educational media, used in moderation, can support learning.
We understand that teachers work hard to engage students and that technology can be a valuable educational tool. Our concern is not with teachers or technology itself, but with how frequently screens are used for activities that could be accomplished without them.
When children have additional free time during the school day, we believe there is tremendous value in encouraging creativity, imagination, and real-world interaction rather than automatically turning to a Chromebook.
We hope to work collaboratively with school leadership to ensure technology is used intentionally, safely, and in ways that genuinely benefit our children’s education and development.
This is not about eliminating technology. It is about making sure that more screen time is not automatically treated as better learning.

Because I believe elementary kids are being exposed to too much screen time, when there are many other creative uses of their projects and free time other than a screen. And also including the inappropriate/scary images that are seemingly easily to obtain and share to other students while using this tool.
