Petition addressed to: Seattle Parks and Rec
We urgently request that Seattle Parks and Recreation allow for the construction of a secure perimeter fence around the playground at Alki Elementary.
Reason
Currently, the playground is open to the surrounding area, loose animals, and the general public. Children do not have physical barriers preventing them from eloping into surrounding areas, including Whale Tail Park, Schmitz Park and Alki beach.
Following the most recent luring attempt at our campus, we must consider how the lack of fencing makes our school more vulnerable. For the record - the October 1st event was not the first time this has happened at Alki Elementary.
The land is managed by Seattle Parks and Rec, and we are asking them to reassess the safety of the school playground and allow for the construction of a fence.
Please see the following reports with information regarding the risk of student elopement and loose animals.

I appreciate that Seattle Parks wants to maintain this space for the community, but the reality is that we can’t have elementary school students at recess unprotected by any barrier. Schools don’t, and shouldn’t, work that way. Opening gates when school is not in session would be a sensible compromise.
