Families were recently informed that the district has hired a new nurse for the district nursing position. The new nurse, Mrs. Wolf, has begun shadowing and will be employed for nursing services at 25 hours per week. The current plan is for nursing coverage to be provided five days per week, approximately from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
This change represents an improvement over the previous structure of having nursing coverage only four days per week. Consistent, five-day presence will provide greater continuity for students and families, and that is a positive step forward.
At the same time, this position remains part time, with portions of each school day not covered by a nurse. While this arrangement may meet the needs of many students, some families may still have concerns about coverage during the early morning and late afternoon hours, particularly for students with complex or time-sensitive medical needs.
My personal view is that full-time nursing coverage remains the gold standard for long-term stability, retention, and student safety. However, I also believe it is important to recognize progress when it is made, and not allow perfect to become the enemy of meaningful improvement.
With that in mind, I plan to attend the upcoming school board meeting to submit this petition and its signatures for the record. At this time, I do not plan to actively pursue additional changes beyond sharing community feedback, unless families come forward who feel that the current coverage is insufficient for their children’s health and safety.
If you are a family who feels strongly that the remaining uncovered hours each day present a serious concern for your child, please reach out. I am committed to supporting those families and continuing this conversation if needed.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to sign the petition, share their perspective, and engage respectfully in this process. Regardless of next steps, the goal remains the same: ensuring that student health and safety are thoughtfully and consistently supported.
