Петиция адресована: Kohler School Board

We are asking the Kohler School District to establish a full-time school nurse position so that all students have consistent access to a qualified medical professional during the school day, five days per week.
While some students require daily medical management, any student may need medical attention at some point during their school career due to illness, injury, or an unexpected health emergency. A full-time school nurse provides the medical expertise needed to assess situations quickly, respond appropriately, and coordinate care while minimizing disruption to learning.
Having a nurse consistently on site improves student safety, reduces missed instructional time, and helps ensure an equitable and supportive learning environment for all students.

основания

Schools are responsible not only for education, but also for the health and safety of the students in their care. While trained staff can assist with basic needs, they are not a substitute for a qualified medical professional when students become ill, are injured, or experience a medical emergency during the school day.
For students with ongoing medical conditions, consistent access to a school nurse is essential in order to attend school safely and participate fully in learning. For other students, the need may arise unexpectedly. Students may experience sudden illness, injury, or other health concerns during the school day, regardless of whether they have a known medical condition. When these situations occur, having a trained medical professional on site allows for faster, more appropriate assessment and response. This not only improves safety and potential outcomes, but also provides reassurance to students, families, and staff and reduces unnecessary disruption to the school day.
Even with modern medical technology, conditions can change rapidly and require professional judgment and timely response. When a nurse is not present, families may be forced to pick up students early or keep them home out of concern for their safety. This affects attendance, learning continuity, and overall confidence in the school environment.
Many districts across the country use approximately 750 students as a common benchmark for establishing a full-time school nurse, and in some states this is a mandated standard. Kohler’s enrollment is very close to that threshold. While Wisconsin does not currently require a full-time nurse, Kohler School District has long held itself to a higher standard than the minimum, and we hope they will do the same in this area as well.
This petition is not about any one individual. It is about ensuring the district has a stable, reliable system in place to support student health and safety and to provide a consistent, equitable learning environment for all students, every day of the school week.

  • On January 21, families in the Kohler School District were informed that Nurse Nicole will be resigning from her position as district nurse, effective February 4, 2026. In her message to families, she shared her gratitude for the opportunity to care for students and emphasized her commitment to ensuring a smooth transition.

Nicole’s departure is meaningful not only because of the care and trust she built with students and families, but also because it highlights a broader structural issue that this petition seeks to address. The district nurse position is currently part time, and the absence of consistent, full-week medical coverage has already been a concern for many families.

With this resignation, the district is approaching an important decision point. How student health needs are supported moving forward, and whether the district continues with a part-time model or commits to a full-time nursing position, will have long-term implications for student safety, attendance, and learning.

This petition is not about any individual employee. It is about encouraging the district and school board to consider establishing a full-time school nurse position as they evaluate next steps and future hiring. Acting now allows the district to consider community input before decisions are finalized, rather than after new structures are already in place.

For families who believe consistent access to a qualified medical professional is important for all students, this moment represents an opportunity to speak up and be heard.

The petition will remain open through February 10 so that signatures can be presented at the February 11 school board meeting.
  • Over the past several weeks, families in the Kohler School District have been made aware of changes affecting how student health needs are supported during the school week. This petition was created to document concerns raised by families and to ask the district to consider establishing a full-time school nurse position.

    Recent staffing changes
The district nurse position is currently part time, with nursing coverage four days per week. On the fifth day, trained non-medical staff provide basic health support. In recent weeks, there have been additional staffing transitions involving office and support staff who previously assisted with student health needs.

    Initial parent outreach
In January, I contacted the school board and district administration as the parent of a student with Type 1 diabetes to express concern about the lack of full-time nursing coverage. In that message, I emphasized that while staff training is important, it is not equivalent to having a qualified medical professional consistently available in the building. The letter focused on student safety, attendance, and educational equity, and noted that the district’s enrollment is close to commonly used benchmarks for full-time nursing coverage.

    District response
The superintendent responded by outlining steps the district is taking to manage the transition, including additional training for office staff and the use of substitute support on days when the nurse is not present. The response expressed confidence in the district’s ability to support students under the current structure.

    Follow-up communication
I replied to clarify that my concern is not about the efforts or intentions of individual staff members, but about the structure itself. In that follow-up, I reiterated that trained staff, while helpful, are not a substitute for having a medical professional on site every day. I also raised concerns about attendance and learning disruptions that can occur when families are unsure whether adequate medical support is available during the school day.

    Why this petition
This petition was created to give families and community members a way to express their support for consistent, full-time nursing coverage. The goal is to ensure that student health and safety are addressed proactively and that community input is considered before future staffing decisions are finalized.

This petition will remain open until Feb 10 so that signatures can be presented at the Feb 11 school board meeting.

Having a full-time school nurse would provide stability for our school community and ensure consistent, continuous care for our children. A well-supported, full-time position allows the nurse to build strong relationships with students, staff, and families, respond quickly to medical needs, and proactively manage health concerns rather than react to them.

My son attends this school and a full time nurse would be great for all the students.

I want the school to be safe for the children.

My children attend KSD and their care by a nurse that will be on site during the entire school day is important to me
