Petition addressed to: The OCPS school board, and district leadership.
We want Mr. Gibbs to be able to keep his position at Evans high school and support University high school get their director back. We’re asking for support and for the people to reach out about this unfair matter.
He wanted to rebuild and grow our choir program. He wanted to bring more students through our doors, take us to competitions, create opportunities to travel to places like New Orleans and Tallahassee, provide us with new choir robes to replace our old dresses, and build a program that students could be proud to belong to.
But more than anything, he wanted to pour into us.
He saw choir as more than just a class. He saw the students behind the music. He wanted to encourage us, guide us, challenge us, and help us become better singers, performers, students, and people. Then, only one months after moving his life from Tallahassee to Orlando for this opportunity, everything changed.
Because of his status as a first-year teacher and district budget cuts, Mr. Gibbs is being pushed out of his position and replaced by another teacher who is also being pushed out of their position at University High School.
Now, University High School is fighting to get their teacher back, while at Evans High School are fighting to keep ours.
Reason
Mr. Gibbs packed up his life and moved 200+ miles away to come teach. He was hand picked for this position and it’s gotten taken from him after one month. He’s getting told to pack up again and figure it out in one week. The students are doing their part to keep him here.
Students deserve teachers who believe in them.
Students deserve mentors who show up for them. The arts deserve investment. And the work Mr. Gibbs started deserves a chance to continue.
Ms. Edith Marlo Wright trusted Mr. Gibbs enough to hand him the program she had spent 10 years building.
He trusted us enough to move his life to Orlando and take on that responsibility.
Now we’re asking our community to trust us enough to help us fight for him.
