Petition addressed to: Government of Sikkim, Gangtok Municipal Corporation, Urban Development Department, and concerned ward authorities
We request the concerned authorities in Gangtok and Sikkim to create safe, green, open play spaces for children in every neighbourhood.
These spaces do not need expensive rides or heavy construction. What children need are simple, accessible parks with grass, trees, fresh air, walking paths, open areas to run and play, and spaces free from vehicles.
We request the authorities to:
- Identify unused or underused public land in different neighbourhoods of Gangtok.
- Convert these areas into safe green parks and open play spaces for children.
- Protect existing parks and open spaces from further concrete development.
- Make sure every ward has access to at least one safe outdoor space for children.
- Maintain these spaces regularly with cleanliness, lighting, seating, and safety measures.
- Involve local communities, parents, schools, and children while planning these spaces.
Children in Gangtok deserve more than concrete parks, malls, screens, and indoor lives. They deserve open skies, green grass, trees, fresh air, and the freedom to play safely.
Reason
Many of us who grew up in Gangtok remember a childhood where we played outside after school, ran around with neighbours, visited parks, fell, got hurt, got up again, and learned so much simply by being outdoors.
Today, many children in Gangtok are growing up inside homes, on phones, in concrete spaces, or in malls. Parents may try their best to take children out whenever possible, but children should not have to wait for an occasional outing to experience open space.
Outdoor play is not a luxury. It is a basic need for a child’s physical, emotional, and social growth.
Children need open spaces to run, jump, play, make friends, build confidence, learn balance, and feel connected to nature. In a hill town like Gangtok, where space is limited and roads are busy, safe green spaces are even more important.
Gangtok is growing, but our planning must also think about children. A city cannot call itself developed if children do not have safe spaces to play freely.
We are not asking for fancy amusement parks or large constructions. We are asking for simple, green, safe, well-maintained public spaces where children can be children.
This demand is important because the way children grow today will shape the future of our society. We must act now before more open spaces disappear and before another generation grows up without access to nature, play, and community life.

Gangtok over the past decade has lost its essence to concrete jungle. Ever if we want to go for a run or play there is no safe space available, there are few but those places are chargeable which is not sustainable for all, not even for me. Building anything new costs and the consumer has to bear the cost which is rightful but if we don’t destroy, do not temper with what actually it’s become sustainable, Eco friendly, long lasting with stories which will echo for generations. So it’s better to save what we already have and add a few more. Open play area gives kids, young as well adults a place to explore, expose, relax, interact brining quality time and vision. The vision comes from seeing and experiencing right…
Why do big hotels have open play area, because it relaxes, gives space, a new venture. Then should towns which now have become cities have it. It is a small thing to have for so big cities with so big dreams aspirations and as the population increases it is a necessity for future generations to just be… it’s very important because all small lanes and roads have become major traffic hub so the play areas for kids are sinking by the day. Have such spaces will help in physical growth which in the long run will improve the health quality because playing running improves the health of individual.
It will also help emotionally because it will become a sharing space for kids and adults to share there stories in a safe space where neither the parents have to be constantly vigilant about the safety and the place will have less restrictions for kids. Less restrictions leads to more exposure right.
And imagine the community that will be built over a decade. And most simply Gangtok as a city has no such place upto now… the question is to all of us… why are we thinking about this now.. this should have been decades back…
All our enemies countries including china, North Korea to the cities we aspire to become including New York, Uk, Israel to Delhi, Mumbai and even Siliguri have these kinds of park… if these reasons don’t sound reasonable we one should go outside Suryasen park in Siliguri and see why we need these parks or open spaces… there is a economy that runs around it so we can build ours too.. it will support the state government vision of entrepreneurship for many people who could do new business as well so let’s do it….
We should do it.. if I had the power to do it, these would be the most important thing to do so..

It is very important to understand and examine the future of upcoming generations as it heavily getting digitalized and commercialized. Children have no space to connect with nature or atleast play out in the open and it is very important for the Govt. of Sikkim to take initiatives to solve this matter. No wonder why anxiety and depression is getting more common amongst the newer generations. It is a very critical matter and needs to be noticed and acted upon immediately. I fully support this petition.
