Petition is addressed to: Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) — Traffic Signals / Region E; Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) — Rea Vaya Phase 1C project team
We, residents, commuters, and businesses in Sandton, call on the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) to urgently restore safe, clear signalisation and road markings at Katherine Street (M85) and Grayston Drive (M40).
Please:
- Reinstall the missing protected right-turn arrow for traffic Katherine St southbound → Grayston Dr westbound.
- Re-mark the dedicated right-turn lane on Katherine Street that existed before construction.
- Reinstall the missing protected left-turn arrow for traffic Grayston Dr eastbound → Katherine St northbound.
- Review and restore correct signal phasing so protected turns operate safely and efficiently.
- Refresh lane markings and advance-warning signage as part of final handover of the Rea Vaya Phase 1C works.
- Publish a clear timeline and reference number for the corrective work so the public can track progress.
Reason
Since the Rea Vaya Phase 1C bus-lane construction on Katherine Street, protected turn phases and lane markings that previously kept this junction safe were removed and not reinstated. As a result:
- Drivers turning right from Katherine now turn from a through-lane without a protected phase, causing long queues and frequent near-misses.
- Some motorists divert into the bus lane, creating confusion and additional safety risks.
- The missing left-turn arrow on Grayston eastbound forces unnecessary queuing back onto Grayston Drive.
- Adding more “No Right Turn” signs has not solved the problem; signage and enforcement can’t substitute for correct traffic engineering.
- Suggested detours are not practical for the high volumes converging at Grayston, pushing more traffic and frustration into the same bottleneck.
Restoring the protected turn phases and the right-turn lane will:
- Reduce crash risk and near-misses,
- Shorten peak-hour queues and ease gridlock,
- Improve clarity for all road users (including BRT buses), and
- Support access to local businesses while maintaining bus priority with sensible, coordinated signal timing.
This is a high-volume, regionally important intersection. We’re asking for a straightforward fix: put back the proven, safer turn arrows and lane markings, and run the signals correctly.
