Petition addressed to: Government of Sikkim, Gangtok Municipal Corporation, Urban Development Department, and concerned ward authorities
To the Government of Sikkim, Gangtok Municipal Corporation, Urban Development
Department, and Respected Ward Authorities,
With great respect and gratitude for the continuous efforts made by the government
towards the development of Gangtok, we, as concerned parents and residents, would like to humbly place before you a small request regarding open spaces for our children.
We are truly thankful for the growth and progress our town has seen over the years. At the same time, we humbly wish to bring to your kind attention a simple hope shared by many families the wish for our children to have small, safe, green spaces where they can play outdoors, close to home.
We do not ask for anything elaborate. Simple, well kept spaces with grass, trees, a walking
path, and some open ground would mean a great deal. Nothing fancy just a little corner of nature where children can breathe fresh air and play safely.
We would also like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to the
Government of Sikkim for the parks it has so thoughtfully already given to us especially
the Ridge Park and the park beside Palzor Stadium. These spaces mean a great deal to the people of Gangtok, and we are truly thankful for the vision and effort that went into creating them. We only humbly wish, with the greatest respect, that these two beloved parks could be looked after a little further perhaps with some additional greenery, safer play areas, and a few more child friendly touches so that our children may enjoy them even more fully and safely in the years to come.
With utmost humility, we request the concerned authorities to kindly consider, as and when feasible,
* Kindly looking into any unused or underused public land in Gangtok’s neighbourhoods that could, in time, be considered for such purpose.
* Gently encouraging the development of small green, open play areas for children, wherever possible.
* Preserving our existing parks and open spaces, if it may kindly be considered, from further concretisation.
* Working towards ensuring, over time, that each ward may have some access to a safe outdoor space for children.
* Continuing the good work of maintaining such spaces cleanliness, lighting, seating, and safety wherever they already exist.
* Kindly considering, if feasible, some additional greenery, safer play corners, and child friendly upkeep at the much loved Ridge Park and the park beside Palzor Stadium, which already bring so much joy to the people of Gangtok.
* If possible, involving parents, schools, and local communities in a small way when such spaces are being planned.
We understand that city planning involves many priorities and constraints, and we deeply respect the wisdom and experience of the authorities in balancing these needs. We simply wished to humbly share this hope on behalf of the children of Gangtok.
Our Humble Reason for Asking
Many of us grew up in Gangtok with fond memories of playing outdoors running around with neighbours, visiting parks, and learning simply by being outside. We feel deeply
grateful for having had that experience.
We have noticed, with some quiet concern, that many children today spend more time
indoors at home, on phones, or in malls perhaps simply because there are fewer green
open spaces nearby. We say this not as any complaint, but only as a humble observation
from parents who wish the best for their children, as we know the authorities do too.
We believe outdoor play plays a gentle but important role in a child’s growth helping them build friendships, confidence, and a connection with nature. We understand that in a hill
town like Gangtok, space is naturally limited, and we are grateful for any consideration given to this challenge.
We are certain that Gangtok’s development already reflects great care for its people, and we only wished to humbly add children’s play spaces as one small thought for future planning whenever time and resources permit. We are not asking for grand amusement parks or heavy construction only small, simple, green corners where children may safely play.We thank you most sincerely for reading this humble request, and for the kindness and
consideration we know you will bring to it, as you have to so many matters concerning our
town.
With heartfelt respect and gratitude, Bhavana Baral Sharma

When we walk around our town, we only see concrete jungles everywhere.. There is a dearth of open space not only for children but also for all the public in general including senior citizens. Open green space in small pockets if not large areas will certainly allow kids and adults alike to spend some time outdoors and do some kind of activity which is good for overall health and ultimately enhances quality of life.
It is very important to understand and examine the future of upcoming generations as it heavily getting digitalized and commercialized. Children have no space to connect with nature or atleast play out in the open and it is very important for the Govt. of Sikkim to take initiatives to solve this matter. No wonder why anxiety and depression is getting more common amongst the newer generations. It is a very critical matter and needs to be noticed and acted upon immediately. I fully support this petition.

Children need to play outdoor games rather than stay indoors and watch TV or surf the internet. Very very important to create play areas for children, some parks or grounds.
